U8s Information

The children for Under 8s should be from Year 3 at school.
We run training sessions on a Sunday morning. Training starts at 10.00 and finishes around 12.00. We will have training sessions during September until we start playing matches. Check out the U8s section of the website for a full fixture list. Please also have a look at our match reports and news from last year to see the sort of things we get up to.
Until they get to school Year 4, the children play a non-contact version of rugby called “Tag Rugby”. This is a 4-a-side game where the children wear a velcro belt with two removable ribbons attached to each side. The attacking side aims to score a try by running towards the try line and putting the ball down on the ground. The defending team aims to stop the attackers and tackle them by removing a tag from the attacker’s belt and shouting “TAG!” The attacker then has to pass the ball to a team mate. The game is fast and furious and great fun.
Training consists of some warm ups, some ball handling / passing / catching drills and a big game of Bulldog to round off with. No previous experience or skills are necessary and we welcome everyone who wants to join in. Basically, we have a big run around to try to tire the children out! Later in the year, we will be developing the idea of tackling / contact so we can give the players the skills they will use for the following year when tackling comes into the game.
Training is free. If the children decide they like it and want to continue, they have to register as a member of the club. This costs £40 per year. This covers kit, insurance, facilities etc. There is then a match tax of £5 per player whenever we have a match.
We train on the artificial “crumb” pitch behind the pavilion. Come up and say “Hello” (we’ll have on jackets saying “COACH”) and we can get your child signed in. Can you please ensure that your child is here by 9.55 at the latest? This means that we can all warm up together. Children should come in a tracksuit and trainers (or studded boots if they have them) and bring with them a drinks bottle and a wet weather jacket if possible.
Hot food and drinks are available from the clubhouse (and the bar opens at 12.00 if you need something stronger after spectating for two hours!).

Please contact one of us on the numbers below if you have any more questions.
